Celebrating Dr. John O. Whitaker, Jr. on Earth Day
On Earth Day, we’re celebrating someone whose life’s work reflects the meaning of the day itself. Dr. John O. Whitaker, Jr. has spent decades studying, caring for, and learning from the natural world.
In 1975, Dr. Whitaker purchased a tract of woodland in west central Indiana. Over the years, that land became more than a place—it became a long-term study, a record of change, and a living classroom. By carefully measuring and tracking more than 2,200 trees across 34 species, he created a body of work that continues to deepen our understanding of forest dynamics and stewardship.
In 2021, Dr. Whitaker made a generous gift to ensure that this land would be protected for the future, creating what is now the John O. Whitaker Woods Nature Preserve. Today, the preserve is open to the public—a place where visitors can experience the same landscape that has been observed, studied, and cared for over decades.
For landowners, stories like this often begin with a simple question about what’s possible for their own land.
It’s a rare thing to be able to walk through a place and know that its story has been so carefully documented—and so thoughtfully protected.
A Legacy That Lives On, and a Path Forward
Dr. Whitaker’s story is one example of how landowners can shape the future of the places they care about. Protecting land isn’t one-size-fits-all—it can take many forms, depending on your goals for your property, your family, and the land itself.
If you’ve ever wondered what the future of your land could look like, we invite you to start exploring your options.
