Breaking Ground: Fresh Trail Magic in the Making

On a sunny, mild morning on March 21, a dedicated group of volunteers gathered at Bushnell’s North Star Woods to take part in something big..

In partnership with the Hoosier Hikers Council (HHC), Ouabache Land Conservancy welcomed volunteers for HHC’s monthly third Saturday workday. This day marked an exciting milestone: after months of planning, the first time boots hit the ground to begin building the trail itself.

From Planning to Breaking Ground

In the months leading up to the workday, members of Hoosier Hikers Council visited the property multiple times—first to evaluate the landscape and identify the best route for a trail, and then to carefully flag that route through the woods. That thoughtful planning ensured the trail would follow the natural contours of the land while creating a meaningful and enjoyable experience for future visitors.

March 21 was the day that planning became tangible.

Volunteers spent the day carving out new paths, clearing debris, and beginning the transformation of existing logging roads into a connected loop trail, designed for exploration, reflection, and connection to the natural world.

A Day Rooted in Community

The setting couldn’t have been better. Early spring had begun to wake the woods, with delicate Spring Beauty wildflowers dotting the ground. Sunlight surrounded us as volunteers worked side by side, sharing tools, conversation, and a shared sense of purpose.

Midday, the group paused to enjoy a generous lunch provided by Hoosier Hikers Council—a taco bar and cookies that offered both fuel and a chance to connect! Moments like these are a reminder that conservation work isn’t just about land. It’s about people, too.

Work That Lasts

These volunteers are helping lay the groundwork for future experiences. For hikers discovering the property for the first time, for families seeking time outdoors, for quiet moments under the trees.

This is legacy-level work. The kind that shapes how Bushnell’s North Star Woods can be experienced for generations.

And it’s not finished yet.

Looking Ahead

We’re grateful to our partners at Hoosier Hikers Council for their continued support and care for this property. The next workday at Bushnell’s North Star Woods is scheduled for April 18, when volunteers will continue building out the trail.

Each workday brings us one step closer to a space that welcomes the community in new and meaningful ways.
