Motus Tower Now Stands at Atherton Island Natural Area
On March 10th, on a warm and slightly windy day at Atherton Island Natural Area in Rosedale, a group of dedicated volunteers gathered for a moment that had been months in the making. After countless conversations, planning meetings, workshops, and phone calls, the Motus Tower was finally assembled. For the Ouabache Land Conservancy, this was more than the installation of a research tool. It was the culmination of the hard work, collaboration, and shared vision of board members, volunteers, partners, and supporters who believe deeply in protecting the wild places of west central Indiana.
Now that the tower stands at Atherton Island, the next chapter begins. Working alongside researchers, the Motus Tower will help track migratory birds and other wildlife, generating valuable data about how animals move through and depend on the natural landscapes protected by OLC. Thanks to the generosity of landowners who conserve their property and the donors who support this work, Atherton Island will now contribute to a global network of wildlife research. It is a powerful reminder that when a community comes together for conservation, the impact reaches far beyond one place. The data gathered here will help scientists and everyday nature lovers alike better understand how wildlife uses these precious remaining wild spaces and why protecting them matters for every living thing that calls this planet home.
