What better place to appreciate poetry inspired by Indiana's landscapes than surrounded by the beauty of an Indiana autumn?
For Ouabache Land Conservancy's final event of 2026, we invited visitors to experience nature and literature together during our first James Whitcomb Riley Poetry Hike at Jackson-Schnyder Nature Preserve.
Led by local writer and photographer Mike Lunsford, the hike brought together poetry enthusiasts and nature lovers for an autumn outing featuring selections from the works of one of Indiana's best-known poets.
The Hoosier Poet
Born in Greenfield, Indiana, in 1849, James Whitcomb Riley earned the nickname "the Hoosier Poet" for his vivid portrayals of rural Indiana life, its people, and its traditions.
His poetry often drew inspiration from the sights, sounds, and changing seasons of the Indiana countryside. Works like When the Frost Is on the Punkin celebrate the arrival of autumn, while The Old Swimmin'-Hole recalls the familiar landscapes and outdoor adventures of childhood.
More than a century after his death, Riley's words still offer a window into the Indiana he knew—and an invitation to appreciate the natural beauty that remains around us today.
Where Nature Meets Literature
With autumn colors providing the backdrop, participants explored Jackson-Schnyder Nature Preserve while enjoying readings and discussions of Riley's poetry.
Mike Lunsford, a longtime supporter of OLC, brought his perspective as a local writer and photographer to the experience, helping connect Riley's literary work with the natural setting around the group.
For our first time offering this event, we were pleased to see a strong turnout. It was a fitting way to close another year of hikes, educational programs, and opportunities to explore and enjoy the natural places of west-central Indiana.
Thank you to Mike for sharing his time and literary interests with us, and to everyone who joined us for this special autumn outing.
As our event season comes to a close, the trails at Jackson-Schnyder and our other nature preserves remain open for visitors to enjoy. And whether you bring a field guide, a camera, or a favorite book of poetry, there's always another way to appreciate the world around you.
